Paris Saint-Germain head coach Cristophe Galtier is confident that Lionel Messi will stay at the club beyond the end of the season.
The Argentine star’s contract expires in the summer, but negotiations about an extension are ongoing.
Galtier himself isn’t involved in these negotiations, but he seemed calm about how things are proceeding when talking to the media on Tuesday.
“I know that talks between the parties to extend his contract are at an advanced stage,” said Galtier.
“In any case, Lionel [Messi]’s renewal is a matter for [sporting director] Luis Campos as I don’t know where things are exactly.
“I believe [Messi] is happy at PSG and is committed to the project.”
Messi to face Ronaldo again
Few would have expected it when the Portuguese star jetted off to Saudi Arabia, but Lionel Messi could soon be facing Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch once more.
PSG are due to play a select team made up of players from Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal on January 19 in Riyadh.
The exhibition game is part of a two-day visit by Qatari-owned PSG to the Gulf region, which will also include promotional work in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
“We agreed to that commitment last season and PSG has to respect it,” said Galtier about the prospect of facing Ronaldo.
“I don’t know [if it’s the best moment to go], but just have to fulfil it.
“Afterwards we’ll come back to play in the French Cup.”
PSG are currently four points clear at the top of Ligue 1, but lost to second-place Lens on New Year’s Day.
After a French Cup win on Friday, the Parisians will be looking to get back into the win column in the league on Wednesday against Angers.
